The Maasai Mara National Reserve (MMNR), known as the “Jewel in the Crown” of Kenya’s protected areas, is crucial for wildlife conservation and Maasai cultural heritage. EarthRanger (ER) software helps manage protected areas by combining various data into a clear overview. Used with Long-Range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN) and integrated sensors, it effectively addresses threats.
This grant supports The Safari Collection Footprint Registered Trustees (TSCF) in implementing ER and LoRaWAN in MMNR and establishing a state-of-the-art Operations Room for real-time monitoring. Additionally, 20 Black rhinoceros will be equipped with long-range sensors.
TSCF recently signed an MoU with Narok County Government to achieve these project goals. A 10-year MMNR management plan has also been released to tackle over-tourism, enhance species protection (especially Black Rhinos), improve ranger skills, and deploy new conservation technologies.
